More secure cycle parking available at Walthamstow Central

11 July 2019

Parking a bike securely at Walthamstow Central has now become even easier after Waltham Forest Council doubled the size of one of the station cycle hubs.

The Selborne Road hub which was originally installed in 2015 has recently expanded from providing 80 cycle spaces to 156 spaces for two wheel bikes, and four spaces for cargo or specialist cycles, as part of the improvement works at Walthamstow Gyratory.

Deputy Leader of the Council Councillor Clyde Loakes recently showed Walking and Cycling Commissioner Will Norman around the newly expanded cycle hub, which also has smart technology informing cyclists how many spaces are available inside.

Councillor Loakes said: “We have already seven cycle hubs in the borough which are really well used, including two beside Walthamstow Central station. They provide a secure, safe and dry place for cyclists to store their bikes for a reasonable annual fee helping to make cycling a cost effective option for getting to the station.

“Soon there will be more hubs available when we’ve completed the improvements we’re building at Blackhorse junction and we are working with TfL to ensure there’s secure parking provision outside Higham Hill and Chingford Stations in the near future as well.”

This week TfL have announced plans to work with local authorities across London to provide more cycle parking to meet demand, currently in London a minimum of 36,000 additional spaces are needed to meet current cycling demand.
