George Mitchell Primary School: School Street

View of Byron Road in Leyton

George Mitchell Primary School already has a Silver STARS accredited Travel Plan which encourages pupil and staff to use active travel methods for their journeys to school and has showed an interest in trialling a School Streets scheme. The school has already engaged with their staff, governors and parents and there is general support from the school community to trial a School Street scheme around the school.

From Friday 24 May 2019 Waltham Forest Council started seeking the views of local residents and businesses on the proposal to introduce a School Street scheme in Byron Road, between Vicarage Road and Jack Cromwell Park.

At present the proposal is for the restrictions to operate during the following dates and times:

Monday to Friday, term time only, between;

  • 8.30am and 9.15am
  • 3pm and 3.45pm

During the above times the road would be made into a pedestrian and cycle only zone. Motor vehicles will not be permitted to enter the pedestrian and cycle zone between these times unless the vehicle has a valid exemption.

The current consultation ends on Wednesday 19 June 2019.

There will be a drop in session held on Monday 10 June at George Mitchell Primary School between 3pm and 7pm.

Next steps

All feedback will be reviewed as part of the decision making process and the outcome of the consultation will be feedback to the school community, local residents and businesses before the school summer holidays.
