Construction updates

Here you'll find the latest updates on the work taking place in the Hoe Street and Wood Street area. If you have a question on the work please email us.

The following works on Shernhall Street have been completed:

  • Road resurfacing between Forest Road and Oliver Road
  • Pavement widening at key locations to reduce the distance people have to walk when crossing the road, making it easier and safer
  • Bus stop upgrades to make them more accessible for all passengers
  • Pavements' have been resurfaced to make the area better and more pleasant.

The following roads are all under construction:

  •  Resurfacing of Shernhall Street between Oliver Road and Barclay Road will start week commencing 19 December for 3 days.
  • A letter was sent to all residents who will be affected by these works advising of specific instructions and information about road closures and diversions week commencing 05 December.

The following roads have been completed had have had blended 'Copenhagen' crossings installed:

  • Aubrey Road
  • Brown’s Road
  • Richard’s Place
  • Tower Hamlets Road
  • Milton Road.

The following roads have been completed and have had pocket parks installed. These are small, but designed areas that include seating, planters, trees and flowers. They create a pleasant and welcoming environment:

  • West Ave Road / St Mary Road.

 

The following road have either had a modal filter installed or upgraded with new trees, plants and flowers. These are road closures that discourage non local traffic from ‘cutting through’ residential streets whilst allowing people who walk and cycle to get about safely and easily. Access for other vehicles such as emergency services, deliveries and bin collections will be maintained and residents will still have access to their street.

  • Cairo Road
  • Barrett Road
  • Church Hill/Church Hill Road
  • Roland Road/Wood Street.

The following roads have had raised junction tables installed, these are designed slow down vehicles when approaching the junction, and to make it easier for pedestrians to cross safely as they have priority over vehicles:

  • Church Hill/Folkestone Road
  • Church Hill/Rectory Road
  • Shernhall Street at the junctions with The Drive and Prospect Hill
  • Shernhall Street at the junctions Forest Road and Oliver Road
  • Shernhall Street at the junctions with, Church Hill Road/Turner Road, Church Lane, Barrett Road and Addison Road.

Shernhall Street corridor has had the following improvements made:

  • All existing pedestrian crossings have been widened, to reduce the distance people have to walk when crossing the road
  • Improved and upgraded bus stops so that they are accessible for all passengers
  • Widened and resurfaced pavements where possible to encourage pedestrians.

Greville Road/Shernhall Street  – work substantially completed except bollards:

  • Greville Road has been closed to through traffic to reduce noise and pollution outside people’s homes. Closing the road means we can also create a new public space at the junction with Shernhall Street. Once this change has been made vehicles will no longer be able to drive through Greville Road/Shernhall Street junction. Access for certain vehicles such as refuse and emergency services will be maintained.

The following roads have been completed had have had blended 'Copenhagen' crossings installed:

  • Aubrey Road
  • Brown’s Road

  • West Ave Road junction with St Mary Road – Pocket Park.
  • Church Hill Road junction with Church Hill Road

 

The following roads have had Raised Table's built. This involves raising the road to pavement level to encourage vehicles to slow down when approaching the junction. These works will improve access for cycling and walking, improve road safety, reduce traffic volumes and generally improve the look and feel of the area:

  • Church Hill Road junction with Rectory Road
  • Shernhall Street at the junctions with The Drive and Prospect Hill.
  • Shernhall Street – Forest Road and Oliver Road + resurfaced
  • Shernhall Street at the junctions with, Church Hill Road/Turner Road, Church Lane, Barrett Road and Addison Road, + existing pedestrian crossings have been widened and resurfaced, bus stops upgraded and made it easier for people to walk.

 

Aubrey Road and Aubrey Road junction with Church Hill Road:

  • Cycle street works have been completed.
  • Tree planting at Aubrey Rd/ Church Hill junction.

 

Roland Road junction with Wood Street

  • Modal Filter/Tiger crossing all works completed.

 

The following roads will soon have the following works started and completed within the next three months:

Shernhall Street - at its junctions with Oliver Road and outside Henry Maynard Infants School (near Addison Rd):

  • Resurfacing will be carried out on week commencing 19 December for 3 nights.
  • Pelican crossings will be upgraded and the carriageway width will be narrowed, the footway width will be increased outside the school.

 

Greville Road junction with Shernhall Street:

  • Road closure with a Modal filter - creating a new public space.
  • Once this change has been made vehicles will no longer be able to drive through Greville Road and Shernhall Street junction
  • Noise and pollution outside people’s homes will be reduced and a more pleasant environment will be created.

 

Church Hill Road junction with Folkestone Road:

  •  A new and improved cycle and pedestrian crossing.

 

Church Hill Road junction with Rectory Road:

  • A new ‘raised junction table’ will be created.

 

Church Hill Road junction with Aubrey Road:

  • A new public space will be created at this junction by constructing a Modal filter. These works will improve access for cycling and walking, improve road safety, reduce traffic volumes and generally improve the look and feel of the area.

 

Church Hill Road junction with Church Hill Road:

  • A new public space at this junction will be created, trees, plants and cycle parking will also be provided.

The following works will soon be started:

  • Resurfacing of Shernhall Street between Oliver Road and Barclay Road will start week commencing 19 December for 3 days.
  • A letter will be sent to all residents who will be affected by these works advising of specific instructions and information about road closures and diversions week commencing 05 December.
  • When resurfacing is taking place, parking will be suspended on Shernhall Street between Oliver Road and Barclay Road. There will be no access to through traffic. Please use nearby alternative roads to park your car. Pedestrians will still be able to use the pavement as normal.
  • Warning signs and diversion signs will be installed in advance, letting drivers know about these temporary changes that will be in place in the area to help prevent congestion. Once the work has finished, all roads will return to normal.

The following works have now been completed:

  • Shernhall Street between Barratt Road and Oliver Road has now been resurfaced.

The following works has been started and soon to be completed:

  • We are currently resurfacing Shernhall Street and aiming to complete by the end of November 2016. During these works, Shernhall St will be closed for through traffic between Barrett Road and Oliver Road. Please see road signs for further details.
  • On completion of this work we will continue to resurface rest of Shernhall Street between Oliver Road and Raglan Road in due course. All residents will be notified of this work and any road closures by letter in due course.

The following work is now complete:

  • The pocket park at the junction of West Avenue Road/ St Mary Road
  • A raised table at the Church Hill/ Rectory Road junction to slow down vehicles
  • A new and improved cycle and pedestrian crossing at the Church Hill/ Folkestone Road junction
  • A new public space on Aubrey Road at its junction with Church Hill
  • A raised table at the junction of Church Hill/ Rectory Road
  • A modal filter (also known as a road closure) on Barrett Road
  • A raised table at the junction of the The Drive/ Prospect Hill, Church Hill/ Turner Road, Church Lane, Barrett Road and Additions Road to encourage vehicles to slow down when approaching the junction
  • Upgraded bus stops to make them accessible for all passengers
  • Widened and resurfaced pavements to make the area better for people who walk
  • A modal filter on Greville Road, including a new public space at the junction with Shernhall Street
  • A raised table on Shernhall Street at its junctions with Oliver Road and outside Henry Maynard Infants School.

  • The new public space at the modal filter (road closure) on Church Hill/ Church Hill Road is almost complete. The public space includes new trees, plants and cycle parking
  • The pedestrian and cycle crossing at Roland Road/Wood Street is now complete
  • A new “raised junction table” is being installed in Shernhall Street at the junctions with The Drive, Prospect Hill, Church Hill Road/Turner Road, Church Lane, Barrett Road and Addison Road. Raised tables involve raising the road to pavement level to encourage vehicles to slow down when approaching a junction
  • Work has started to improve and upgrade the bus stops so they are accessible for all passengers.

  • A new cycle and pedestrian crossing has been created at the Church Hill/ Folkstone Road junction.
  • A new modal filter has been installed at the junction of Church Hill and Church Hill Road, and a public space has been created with the use of trees, plants and cycle parking.
  • Pocket parks have been created at the junction of West Avenue Road/ St Mary's Road and Cairo Road/ Hoe Street.
  • New blended Copenhagen crossings have been introduced on the following roads:
    - Aubrey Road
    - Brown’s Road
    - Richard’s Place
    - Tower Hamlets Road
    - Milton Road.
  • A cycle street is currently being constructed on Aubrey Road and is scheduled to be completed by 29 July
  • A modal filter and a cycle/ pedestrian crossing is being installed at the junction of Roland Road/ Wood Street and is scheduled to be completed by 3 August.
  • A new raised table is under construction on the Church Hill/ Rectory Road junction and should be completed by 29 July. A raised junction involves raising the road to pavement level to encourage vehicles to slow down when approaching a junction, making it safer for pedestrians to cross the road.

  • Brown's Road - we've completed the work on Brown's Road which included

    road resurfacing and creating a new blended 'Copenhagen' crossing at it's junction with Hoe Street

  • Richard's Place - we've started work to create a blended 'Copenhagen' crossing at the junction with Hoe Street. Work is due to be completed by 19 February
  • St Mary's Road / West Avenue - work creating the new pocket park here started on Thursday 4 February and will continue until 19 February. Pocket parks involve putting plants, trees and seating in place to create a public space for the community to enjoy
  • Cairo Road - work will begin on Cairo Road from Monday 15 February on the new blended 'Copenhagen' crossing at the junction with Hoe Street
  • Tower Hamlets Road - between 15 and 19 February road resurfacing will take place on Tower Hamlets Road. Once completed, work will begin on the new blended 'Copenhagen' crossing at the junction with Hoe Street.
